Lots of the team at Early Days Foods are parents and we understand the stress and run road trips can bring. With a bit of preparation and creativity, you can turn those hours on the road into a fun-filled adventure for your children. In this blog post, we’ll explore road trip car activities for children, with a special focus on the captivating world of audio books. So, buckle up and get ready for an unforgettable journey!

The Magic of Audio Books:

Audio books are a fantastic way to keep children engaged and entertained during long car rides. They transport young minds to far-off places, spark their imagination, and create a love for storytelling. Before your trip, browse through a selection of age-appropriate audio books and let your children choose their favourites. Encourage them to bring their own headphones to fully immerse themselves in the audio experience. Whether it’s a beloved classic, an exciting adventure, or a fascinating educational book, audio books are sure to make the miles fly by. An easy way to choosing and play audio books is through apps. 2 of our favourite are ‘Libby’ and ‘Audible’. The former being the library services own app, this is great for a good selection of books, both classic childhood favourites and new releases. All free to library members.

Audible is a paid for membership but it does have a larger selection

Interactive Storytelling:

Take the audio book experience to the next level by turning it into an interactive activity. Pause the audio book at different points and encourage your children to predict what might happen next. Engage them in discussions about the characters, their motivations, and the story’s themes. You can even invite your kids to create their own alternative endings or continue the story in their own imaginative ways. This not only keeps them entertained but also stimulates their critical thinking skills.

Sing-Along Sessions:

What’s a road trip without a sing-along session? Prepare a playlist of your children’s favourite songs or nursery rhymes and sing along as a family. You can even include some classic road trip tunes that everyone can enjoy. Music has a way of bringing people together, and singing along fosters a sense of togetherness and creates wonderful memories. Don’t worry about hitting all the right notes; it’s all about having fun!

Car Games Galore:

Car games are a tried-and-true way to keep children entertained during road trips. Here are a few popular options:

a) “I Spy”: One person selects an object they see, and the others try to guess what it is by asking questions that can be answered with “yes” or “no.” a good way to change this up and simplify for younger family members is to use colours. Eg, I spy something green – grass or trees etc.

b) “20 Questions”: One person thinks of an object, and the others take turns asking yes-or-no questions to guess what it is. The goal is to guess within 20 questions.

c) “Number Plate Alphabet Game”: try to spot the alphabet letters in sequence from A-Z on the number plates of vehicles passing

d) “Alphabet Game”: Look for words or objects outside the car that start with each letter of the alphabet, in order.

Snack Time Adventures:

Road trips and snacks go hand in hand. Pack a variety of healthy and delicious snacks that your children can enjoy during the journey. Involve them in the preparation process by letting them choose their favourite treats. Snack time can also become a learning experience as you discuss the nutritional value and benefits of the foods you’re eating.

Conclusion:

A road trip can be an exciting adventure for the entire family, especially when you have the right activities planned to keep children engaged and entertained. Audio books, interactive storytelling, sing-alongs, car games, and snack time adventures are just a few ways to make the journey enjoyable and memorable. Remember to prioritize safety, take breaks along the way, and have fun exploring new destinations together. So, start the car, hit the road, and let the magic of audio books and other engaging activities make your family’s road trip an unforgettable experience!
